Intellectual Property Law

This course aims at providing the students with an in-depth understanding of intellectual property (IP) law. The first part of the course will examine the requirements and scope of protection for each type of IP rights (Copyright, Patent, and Trademark). The course will consider the applicable protection regimes and provisions from the perspective of international law (international treaties) together with a comparative approach of national legal frameworks. Relevant IP provisions in UAE laws and case law will be examined and discussed in the frame of this approach. The second part of the course will discuss the management and exploitation of IP rights as assets that can be transferred, licensed, or contributed in a joint venture. The course will explain and discuss how to effectively draft contracts and key provisions in IP focused agreements: Assignment/License/Non-disclosure agreement/ Technology transfer agreement.
