This course unit introduces the essential mathematical foundations for first-year preparatory class students. It establishes the basis for rigorous reasoning and mathematical structures used across mathematics, physics, and computer science. The course begins with propositional logic and proof techniques, enabling students to read and construct correct mathematical arguments. It then covers numbers — integers, rationals, reals, and complex numbers. The chapter on natural numbers and induction introduces a fundamental proof tool, widely used throughout the curriculum. The second part of the course focuses on structures: sets, binary relations, and functions, which form the core language of modern mathematics. Emphasis is placed on the notational and reasoning rigor expected at university level.
