This course provides an introduction to actuarial sciences, covering foundational topics such as the history and evolving role of actuaries, essential skills and responsibilities, and career pathways in this field. Students will explore the unique aspects of the insurance industry, including the distinction between life and non-life insurance, actuarial versus underwriting roles, and the fundamentals of pricing and reserving. Key mathematical and statistical concepts, such as discounting, survival models, and mortality analysis, are introduced to build a solid understanding of the quantitative methods actuaries use in their work in particular for pricing and reserving in life and non-life main products. The course also delves into the broader impact of actuaries in managing risks within an uncertain, modern world.
