USJ Dominates Lebanese University Sports: 2022-2023 Season Recap

Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) has once again secured its top position in the overall ranking of Lebanese universities for the 2022-2023 season, clinching the coveted “University Shield” title awarded by the Lebanese University Sports Federation (FSUL).

USJ’s remarkable sports prowess propelled them to the pinnacle of the final standings among the 20 universities that participated in the 22 official Lebanese championships organized by FSUL throughout the season. The battle for supremacy was a closely contested affair, with USJ and the Lebanese American University (LAU) of Byblos vying for the top spot until the very end, which came to a dramatic conclusion during the last taekwondo championship of the season, signaling the close of an action-packed sporting calendar.

The champion team from USJ amassed an impressive 68 points (surpassing their 58-point record from the 2021-2022 season), while LAU Byblos secured second place with 56 points (a substantial leap from their third-place finish with 38 points the previous season). Antonine University secured a commendable third place with 43 points (up from fourth place with 32 points last season), while the American University of Beirut (AUB) moved from second to fourth place with 39 points (compared to their 45 points from the last season). Holy Spirit University of Kaslik (USEK) made an impressive debut, securing fifth place with 31 points, despite not participating in the previous season.

Between November 2022 and June 2023, FSUL orchestrated a total of 8 championships for team sports and 14 for individual sports. Points were allocated to the top four victors in each men’s and women’s championship, culminating in the determination of the season’s victors.

USJ displayed exceptional prowess in accumulating points, excelling in 16 out of the 22 championships, boasting an impressive success rate of 73% for women and 77% for men.
