FEATURED HIGHLIGHTS:
Reena Esmail, This Love Between Us
“This Love Between Us” is a composition that exalts unity, manifesting through its seven movements that seamlessly blend themes from seven of India’s venerable religious traditions: Buddhism, Sikhism, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Islam. Each movement embodies the principles of unity, brotherhood, and kindness to others inherent in these traditions. The lyrics are skillfully performed in both English and the native language corresponding to each religious tradition. Within each movement, a distinctive fusion of Indian and Western classical styles unfolds, traversing from the Christian movement deeply rooted in the Baroque style to the Zoroastrian movement, which embraces the Hindustani vilambit bandish style. The remaining movements skillfully navigate the space between these two musical cultures, intricately weaving together diverse techniques, styles, and forms. Beyond the convergence of musical practices, this composition serves as a harmonious meeting ground for musicians from two distinct traditions. The inclusion of sitar and tabla alongside the choir and baroque orchestra brings forth a rich tapestry of musical diversity.
Oscar-winning Composer A.R. Rahman’s Cinematic Hits
The second part of the program is a tribute to the legendary Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman, a prolific composer since 1992, who has crafted over 100 film scores. Known for his cinematic brilliance, Rahman has sold over 300 million copies worldwide and earned numerous accolades, including Oscars and Grammy Awards. Notably, in 2008, he clinched his first Oscars and Grammy Awards for his outstanding score in the British film “Slumdog Millionaire,” particularly for the unforgettable song, Jai Ho. The USJ Choir, accompanied by the orchestra, will showcase unique arrangements of Rahman’s cinematic hits, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic compositions that have captured hearts globally.
