A Heritage Unfolded

The first stop of Father Sosa’s visit was the Museum of Lebanese Prehistory (MPL), where he was warmly welcomed by MPL Director Maya Haidar Boustani. Accompanied by USJ Rector Prof. Salim Daccache, SJ, Rev. Fr Michael Zammit Mangion, SJ, Provincial Superior of the Middle East and North Africa Province, and other distinguished guests including Minister of Energy and Water and President of the Board of Trustees, Mr. Joe Saddi, Father Sosa explored the museum’s extensive collections. The visit provided a valuable opportunity to recognize the museum’s role in preserving Lebanon’s prehistoric heritage for future generations.

Father Sosa then continued his tour at the Oriental Library (BO), where he was introduced to rare manuscripts, historical maps, and periodicals by BO Director Joseph Rustom. The visit culminated with a stop at the Jesuit Museum of Photography, offering a deeper look into USJ’s cultural legacy.

Patronal Feast

The evening of March 18 began with a solemn Mass at Saint Joseph Church, celebrated by Father Zammit Mangion, with the USJ choir enhancing the service with their sacred melodies. Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Paolo Borgia read a heartfelt blessing from Pope Francis, recognizing USJ’s significant role in Lebanon’s academic and cultural life and encouraging the USJ community to continue their mission with steadfast dedication.

Following the Mass, a photographic exhibition was unveiled in the church crypt, offering a visual journey through USJ’s 150-year history.

Medical Innovation and Excellence: HDF, FM, Ralph Audi Simulation Center, MEDSIM

On March 19, Father Sosa visited the University Medical Center, Hôtel-Dieu de France (HDF), and the Medical Sciences Campus (CSM). He explored key units, including Emergency, Pediatrics, Medical Imaging, and Dialysis, where staff introduces their services. The visit also included a prayer and blessing at the Chapel of Our Lady of Tenderness. The USJ delegation included the Rector, Provincial, Vice-Rectors, Secretary-General, and the four Deans of the CSM (Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and Nursing).

At CSM, Father Sosa toured the newly renovated Faculty of Medicine and the Ralph Audi Simulation Center, MEDSIM. The visit featured stops at the Wall of Donors, Our Lady’s Garden, the blessing of a new statue of Our Lady, and an exploration of the historic Chancellor’s Office and the Centennial Alley of the Faculty of Dental Medicine. He also observed a demonstration of advanced dental robotics at the Faculty’s Dental Care Center. The MEDSIM visit showcased immersive training scenarios with robotic mannequins and AI-assisted surgical tools, offering students a realistic environment to refine their skills and reduce clinical risks.

The CSM visit concluded with a tour of the Botanical Garden on campus.

Three Discussions, One Vision

Father Sosa’s visit also included three important discussions with the USJ community at the François S. Bassil Auditorium on the Innovation and Sports Campus (CIS).

The first gathering brought together the Board of Trustees, deans, directors, faculty, staff, and HDF representatives for a thoughtful conversation on USJ’s Jesuit mission. Participants examined the challenges facing higher education and discussed the University’s role in shaping students’ futures and contributing to society. Topics also included student financial support through scholarships, the importance of interfaith dialogue, academic training challenges, and the evolving role of artificial intelligence in education. USJ’s contributions to healthcare through its hospital network and its unwavering commitment to social responsibility were also key points of reflection.

The second gathering gave students an opportunity to share their experiences and their strong connection to USJ’s values. They spoke openly about the obstacles they face in a rapidly changing academic and social environment, offering valuable insights into their resilience and determination.

The final gathering brought alumni together for a discussion on civic engagement, economic challenges, and the impact of interfaith dialogue. The conversation also explored ways to support younger generations, the role of USJ and its alumni in healthcare, and the contributions of NGOs to social development.

Father Sosa shared his reflections with the group, emphasizing the importance of Jesuit education and praising USJ for embodying Ignatian values. “Through your daily efforts, you bring Jesuit values to life, embodying the spirit of being men and women for others,” he stated.

USJ celebrated its 150th Patronal Feast on the evening of March 19 at the Sciences and Technology Campus – Mar Roukoz. Also present were Vice Prime Minister Tarek Mitri, current and former ministers and deputies, ambassadors, a representative of the Lebanese Army Commander, USJ Vice Rectors, the Secretary-General, the Director General of HDF, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends.

In his speech, the Rector emphasized USJ’s role as a hub for collaboration and innovation, stressing its commitment to academic excellence, solidarity, and ethical values. He also shared personal stories from alumni and students, highlighting the significant impact USJ has had on their personal and professional growth.

The event further highlighted the University’s forward-thinking endeavors in research, sustainability, and innovation, underscoring its determination to meet the evolving challenges of the future.

Father Sosa conveyed his gratitude in joining USJ’s 150th anniversary celebration, especially following a tumultuous period of conflict and devastation. He reflected on the significance of anniversaries, particularly for institutions like USJ, as a time to acknowledge the milestones, and honor not only their triumphs but also the trials they’ve overcome. He underscored the deep-rooted connection between USJ and Lebanon’s history, emphasizing the University’s enduring role as a pillar of resilience, offering unwavering guidance and support in the face of the nation’s most difficult times.

Father Sosa also recognized the significant influence of the Jesuit Order in shaping USJ’s legacy, from its founding figures to the present-day members who continue to uphold its mission. Yet, he emphasized that the University’s achievements are not solely attributed to the Jesuits, but also to the commitment and contributions of all those who have supported and advanced its cause over the years.

Father Sosa emphasized USJ’s strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility, commending its sustainability initiatives and support for vulnerable communities. “The University’s social mission is far from a mere concept; it is woven into the very essence of its identity. Such steadfast commitment is uncommon in academic institutions, and it stands as a defining characteristic of your identity,” he said. He further acknowledged the invaluable contributions of HDF, Opération 7e jour, Al Mazeed NGO, in partnership with the USJ Campus Ministry, and Financial Aid Office, all of whom tirelessly work to support both students and the broader society.

In his concluding remarks, Father Sosa underscored the significance of the foundational values that define USJ, particularly the unwavering commitment to human dignity, religious freedom, and meaningful engagement with the currents of contemporary culture. “Freedom is closely tied to community, valuing religious diversity as a strength and promoting dialogue, mutual understanding, and collaboration," he said.

To conclude, Minister Joe Saddi, on behalf of Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun, awarded the Commander’s Grade of the National Order of the Cedar to the Saint Joseph University of Beirut. Prof. Salim Daccache accepted the distinction on the University’s behalf.

A book documenting USJ’s history, authored by Prof. Christian Taoutel, was presented to attendees. The celebration concluded with a dinner at the Sciences and Technology Campus.
