USJ 150th Anniversary Casino Night Fundraiser: A Glamorous Evening in Houston

Saturday, April 5, 2025

The Houston Chapter of the USJ Alumni Association USA lit up the city with a spectacular celebration of Saint Joseph University of Beirut’s 150th anniversary on Saturday, April 5, 2025. Held under the festive theme of a “Casino Night Fundraiser,” the evening brought together alumni, friends, and supporters for a memorable night of entertainment, purpose, and shared pride.

The celebration kicked off with lively emceeing by Dr. Cynthia Abou Zeid and Dr. Joe Aoun, who welcomed guests and set an upbeat tone for the evening. This was followed by Mr. Pierre Moubarak, President of the Houston Chapter, who delivered a heartfelt speech honoring the legacy of USJ and its impact on generations of students and stressing the importance to give back, ensuring that this university continues to thrive for another 150 years and beyond. He also highlighted the chapter’s 2024 achievements including the successful Gala and the election of the new board. His words set the tone for the evening—one of gratitude, solidarity, and festive joy. Later, Mr. Karl Abou Sleiman, chapter treasurer presented the “Adopt A Student” program and invited guests to support it.

The program continued with a stirring video tribute to USJ’s 150 years of excellence and resilience, followed by a touching testimony from a student whose education was made possible through the support of a generous Houston-based friend of the university. In a moving video, the student expressed:

"Your donation and support gave me hope, dignity, and a future. To the one who believed in me without knowing me - thank you. I carry your kindness with me every day.”

The emotional moment reminded everyone of the true purpose behind the evening—changing lives through education.

As the night unfolded, guests mingled, played casino-themed games, and danced the night away, enjoying a lively atmosphere filled with music, laughter, and camaraderie. Between spins of the roulette wheel and hands of poker, attendees celebrated not just their shared university ties, but also their commitment to supporting Lebanon’s future.

And of course, no USJ event in Houston would be complete without the joyful and spirited voice of Dr. Pierre Khoury. As he took the mic and sang a selection of cherished songs, the room filled with cheer, nostalgia, and renewed enthusiasm—adding the perfect finishing touch to an unforgettable night.

The event concluded with raffle drawing for 6 donated prizes and spontaneous renditions of Fairuz classics by young talents in the audience – an impromptu moment that captured the warmth of the evening.

More than just a fundraiser, the evening was a testament to community, generosity, and unwavering faith in the power of education.

Special thanks to the dedicated organizing committee (Mr. Karl Abou Sleiman, Dr. Pascale Atallah, Dr. Fadi Haddad, Mrs. Randa Hakim, Dr. Pierre N Khoury, Mr. Pierre Moubarak and Mr. Chadi Sayhoun), as well as the MCs, the volunteers and everyone who attended and donated.
