The Saint Joseph University of Beirut and its Bibliothèque Orientale (Oriental Library) warmly thank the Michel Chiha Foundation for its generous donation of the exceptional archives of Michel Chiha, one of the founding fathers of the Lebanese Constitution.
Michel Chiha (1891–1954) was a distinguished politician, writer, journalist, and banker. Widely regarded as the father of the Lebanese Constitution, his vision and leadership played a decisive role in shaping modern Lebanon.
The donation comprises a rich collection of handwritten notes, correspondence, original works, press articles, and other invaluable documents related to the origins of the Lebanese Constitution. Authored by Michel Chiha or written about him, these materials now enrich the collections of the Bibliothèque Orientale (Oriental Library) at USJ, underscoring his profound influence on Lebanon’s modern political identity in the post–French Mandate period.
The ceremony convened leading academic and institutional figures to mark the donation and emphasize the historical importance of the archives. The event opened with remarks by Prof. Salim Daccache, SJ, Rector of USJ, followed by contributions from Mrs. Cynthia-Maria Ghobril Andrea, Director of Fondation USJ; Dr. Claude Doumet Serhal, President of the Michel Chiha Foundation; Philippe Helou, member of the Foundation; and Dr. Karim Emile Bitar, Professor of International Relations at USJ.
Through this collection, USJ and its Bibliothèque Orientale (Oriental Library) reaffirm their commitment to safeguarding a cornerstone of Lebanon’s historical and intellectual heritage. The archives will be preserved, digitized, and made accessible to support advanced research into Michel Chiha’s thought and legacy.
As a leading center for the study of the humanities and Lebanese archives, the Bibliothèque Orientale (Oriental Library) will actively promote this collection, ensuring it serves as a lasting resource for research and the transmission of Lebanon’s history.
