On Friday, September 20, 2024, Saint Joseph University of Beirut marked a historic milestone with the inauguration of its Hall of Donors on the Medical Sciences Campus, Damascus Road, officially launching the University’s 150th anniversary year.
The ceremony brought together Lebanon’s leaders and prominent figures, including former President Amine Gemayel, Minister of Education and Higher Education H.E. Abbas Halabi, and Minister of Tourism H.E. Walid Nassar, represented by Ms. Joelle Hajjar. The Reverend Father Michael Zammit Mangion, SJ, Provincial of the Society of Jesus in the Near East and Maghreb, joined USJ leaders, instructors, students, and friends of the University to witness this historic occasion.
Professor Nadine Riachi Haddad, USJ Secretary-General, opened the event by highlighting the University’s resilience amid Lebanon’s challenges. “Amid explosions, gunfire, and conflict, we uphold culture, dialogue, and peace. This is our identity; this is our mission,” she affirmed.
“To celebrate our joy, to express our deepest gratitude, and to bless the 150th anniversary of our University,” continued Riachi Haddad, “we are honored to welcome Fr. Michael Zammit Mangion, SJ, Provincial of the Society of Jesus for the Near East and North Africa. Since assuming his mandate in 2020, he has steadfastly confronted, alongside the Jesuits of the Province, the successive crises that have shaken Lebanon and the region, offering vital support to alleviate the suffering of those most affected.”
In recognition of his unwavering dedication and his blessing on this milestone, the Rector presented him with the medal commemorating USJ’s 150th anniversary.
The Hall of Donors pays tribute to more than 2,900 benefactors whose generosity has sustained USJ for decades. As Ms. Cynthia Ghobril Andréa, Director of Fondation USJ, so eloquently remarked:
“This is not simply a Wall of Donors, it is a Hall of Donors, created to go further in expressing our gratitude and to offer a space that honors the true measure of your generosity. It is a gesture, symbolic yet profound, one that mirrors the extraordinary scale of your commitment and the enduring impact of your support.”
This space is dedicated to members of the Platinum and Diamond donor circles, as well as the prestigious 1875 Circle, which brings together donors whose contributions range from $100,000 to over $1 million.
“Every contribution matters and creates lasting impact, whether it supports our University and its students, our hospital and its patients, or our broader mission in service of Lebanon for the past 150 years,” she said, highlighting the essential role of donor commitment.
Mr. Samir Assaf, President of the Board of Directors of Fondation USJ, described the Hall as a symbol of hope, trust, and the support that empowers Lebanon’s youth to believe in themselves and their future. “Your support gives them the confidence to believe in themselves,” he said.
Ghassan Haroun, on behalf of the students, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donors, emphasizing that their generosity empowers students to fully dedicate themselves to their studies. He also praised USJ’s educational environment for fostering excellence and preparing students to become engaged, thoughtful leaders in society.
The guest of honor, Albert Kostanian, USJ alumnus and economist, noted that the 150th anniversary is far more than a celebration. “It is a testament to a vision of the world grounded in reason and faith,” he said, highlighting USJ’s crucial role in sustaining Lebanon’s intellectual and social life, even during times of crisis. He also emphasized the University’s lasting impact in shaping generations of engaged citizens, particularly through the civic movements that have grown from its campuses.
Kostanian noted that, like other leading Lebanese institutions, USJ continues to promote forward-thinking ideas and cultivate talent that reaches across the region. He highlighted the University’s core mission, and that of Beirut itself: to foster pluralism, embrace diversity, and build a more humane and sustainable future.
Prof. Daccache underscored the milestone’s significance in USJ’s history, praising instructors, alumni, and donors whose dedication has shaped the University’s reputation. From its founding by the Jesuits in 1875, USJ has become a symbol of knowledge, culture, and innovation, standing resilient in the face of challenges. “Today,” he said, “we dedicate the Hall of Donors to the instructors, alumni, and benefactors who have shaped this University, and on this anniversary, we reflect on a history built on sacrifice and solidarity.”
“Since its early roots, USJ has grown into one of the region’s most prestigious institutions while remaining true to its mission of academic excellence and service,” Prof. Daccache said. “It has become a hub where creative minds meet and ideas take shape, reaching beyond academic boundaries. Our trilingual programs in French, Arabic, and English reflect Lebanon’s rich diversity and provide students with a dynamic environment grounded in openness, respect, and critical engagement.”
Following the address of H.E. Walid Nassar, represented by Ms. Joelle Hajjar, the launch of USJ’s 150th anniversary continued with the 3D mapping show Our 150 Years: A Legacy, A Vision, which traced the University’s history and growth through striking visuals and sound. In his speech, the Rector noted that students, at the heart of USJ, are recognized for their energy and engagement, as seen in their participation in the rally celebrating the University’s values. “Our alumni,” he added, “are celebrated for their achievements, which highlight USJ worldwide and inspire future generations.” The faculty were thanked for their dedication to forming leaders and engaged citizens, whose accomplishments continue to honor the University.
Prof. Daccache also acknowledged the organizers and partners for their vital contribution to the event’s success, highlighting that their dedication and support have allowed USJ to undertake ambitious projects and offer exceptional opportunities to its students.
The evening concluded with remarks from student representatives Mary Fares and Patrick Chehade, messages from alumni and friends, the announcement of the Rallye 360 results, and a reception celebrating the University community and its donors, all united in a shared spirit of hope and commitment to Lebanon’s future.
