Familiar faces in the streets... and a beautiful tribute for USJ’s 150th anniversary!

usj-150-ans

USJ, a place where talents are nurtured, where remarkable individuals find their roots and go on to inspire future generations.

If you have recently strolled through the streets of Beirut, Mar Roukos, Ras Maska, Saida, Bhamdoun, Zahle, or Taanayel, you may have noticed portraits displayed in areas where USJ is present. This is a project launched by our Rector, Professor Salim Daccache, SJ

Through this project, faces come to life in the streets to celebrate an important milestone - the 150th anniversary of USJ - but also to honor those who contributed to building this University over the years. These portraits embody the excellence of our community, recognized for their contributions to the University, their professional fields, or society at large. These figures left a mark on their era, helping USJ shine well beyond its walls. They remind us of the collective human and academic legacy of an institution that, across generations, has shaped leaders and pioneers, thus defining Lebanon’s history and development.

Who are these figures proudly displayed in our streets?

Among them are explorers of knowledge, passionate researchers, and pioneers in their respective fields. Whether these alumni revolutionized business, redefined arts and culture, pushed the boundaries of medicine and research, established laws and justice, or influenced the political scene, they all carry the imprint of their Alma Mater. Included are religious figures who have worked for education, dialogue, and peace, as well as philanthropists whose generosity has supported the University and its projects. They have shaped the national landscape and beyond, through their achievements and commitment. Their journeys reflect their success, and above all, the role of USJ in shaping the leaders of tomorrow.

The role of the Jesuits has been crucial in making USJ a center of excellence, a key player in the educational and cultural landscape. Their impact goes beyond academics: seven Jesuit martyrs gave their lives for Lebanon, through their sacrifice and commitment. Their memory remains engraved in the history of USJ and of the country, a symbol of unwavering dedication and service to others.

Living the University Experience: High School Students at USJ

From the 9th until the 16th of April 2025, the Saint Joseph University of Beirut opened its doors, welcoming secondary classes students to the USJ Shadowing Weeks. Organized by the Student Information and Orientation Office and the USJ institutions, this initiative allowed secondary cycle students to experience true immersion living the life of a university student.

During these weeks, the participants had the opportunity to attend open classes, explore the different USJ campuses in Beirut, and immerse themselves in fields that interest them. The main objective of this experience was to guide young people in reflecting on their academic and professional future, while offering them a concrete view of university life.

The feedback was very positive, both from the students who participated, to the organizers of every USJ institution. Participants expressed their enthusiasm about this unique opportunity that allowed them to better understand the programs offered, the requirements of the different fields, and the atmosphere on the campuses.

Moreover, this experience fortified the links between USJ and schools, highlighting the importance of active and personalized orientation

392 students from 28 schools across Lebanon took advantage of this opportunity, distributed among 28 institutions of USJ.

At last and through these shadowing weeks, USJ affirmed its commitment to guiding the new generation towards making thoughtful decisions aligned with their goals.
