Arrival and welcome meeting:

It is recommended for foreign students to arrive to Lebanon at least 10 days prior to the beginning of the academic year, in order for them to familiarize themselves with the campuses, register and find accommodation, etc.

The welcome meeting for international students usually takes place 1 week before the start of the academic year.

Visa and residency permit:

You can apply for a visa at the closest Lebanese Consulate.
Some international passport holders – notably Europeans – can get a tourist visa at the airport but procedures may vary from one country to another so always refer to the Lebanese Consulate at your country and the Lebanese General Security’s website for accurate procedures.

Requirements to get a tourist visa at the airport:

  • A passport valid for at least 12 months from the date of arrival to Lebanon
  • USJ admission certificate

Once in Lebanon, if the visa does not cover the entire duration of the stay, it is possible to apply for visa extension or student residence at the General Security

Requirements for a residency permit:

  • A passport that is valid for at least one year
  • Two photocopies of the passport (pages including the photo, passport number, expiry date, visa, and entrance stamp)
  • Three photos (4x4)
  • A Certificate of enrollment at USJ (in Arabic) indicating the period of stay and the tuition fee waiver.  This certificate is delivered by the International relations office. It must then be stamped by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (UNESCO, Abou Chahla road, 6th floor. Tel.: 01-789907)
  • A housing certificate (with an indication of the exact address, owner’s name and contact)
  • A certificate from the student’s embassy in Lebanon certifying the status of “student”
  • A bank statement
  • A certificate from a notary stating that no paid employment will be undertaken during the stay
  • 250 000 LL or 300 000 LL (depending on the visa type)

IMPORTANT

  • Keep copies of all documents handed to the General Security
  • Be careful not to lose the receipt that will be issued at the time of submission of the application.
  • For queries or complaints related to the Lebanese General Security dial: 1717 or 01-389116

Daily life in Beirut

Budget

Lebanon is a rather expensive country especially in terms of accommodation. An average student will need approximately 1.5 million LL (1000 dollars) per month to cover accommodation, food, and other daily expenses. However, the budget depends a lot on where you live and how you spend it.

Meals

Student cafeterias, bakeries, small restaurants and snacks offer man’ousheh, salads, sandwiches and meals at affordable prices. It is common in Lebanon to leave a tip when you are satisfied with the service (around 10% of the bill).

Transport (bus / Service / taxi)

  • The city bus ride costs between 500 and 1000 LL.
  • A long distance bus ride costs a maximum of 4000 LL.
  • A shared taxi (commonly called "Service") costs between 2000 and 4000 LL maximum for long distance transport and is very common within the area of Beirut. The fixed price is 2000 LL per person.
  • Only taxis with red license plates are allowed to circulate.

Phone line and Internet

One can make international calls from post offices and special stores. There are also phone cards to call overseas.
As per mobile phones, you can get a number from one of the two local operators Alfa and Touch; 3G and 4G services are also available.
For example, you can buy a phone line for 30,000 LL from a phone store and refill your line each month for 15,000 LL or more; depending on your need.

  2. Touch website

Wifi is available in most restaurants and coffee shops.
