Despite the severe financial crisis prevailing in the country for more than two years, the Faculty of Medicine (FM) managed to rise to a great challenge and takes great pleasure in announcing the launch of its new Laboratory of Anatomy.

This laboratory, the first of its kind in Lebanon, is designed to be very high-tech and is equipped with plastinates, exclusively made for FM by the German company Von Hagens, a world leader in this field. This laboratory is located on the third floor of the new Simulation Center at FM on its Damascus Road campus.

Plastination is an innovative method of preserving anatomical specimens in which all bodily fluids are replaced with a hardened polymer. Plastination was invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977. Since then, with the help of his team, he has worked on improving this process. Through this revolutionary Plastination process, the specimens are odorless and harmless and are permanently fixed with original properties.

Such a project would not have been possible without the determination of FM Dean, Prof. Roland Tomb, who shouldered this project despite all odds, as well as the enthusiasm and perseverance of Prof. Gaby Kreichati, Director of Academic Programs, and visiting Prof. Laurent Hokayem, who revamped anatomical teaching at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). They both traveled to Germany to check that the specimens were properly executed. Prof. Fadi Geara, Vice-Rector for Administration, succeeded in overcoming all financial constraints to equip the FM with this outstanding piece of work.

A special thanks to Mr. Joseph Younes, Campus Administrator, for his steadfast support in completing the project on schedule and making this laboratory available to students and faculty in early 2022.
