A Living Legacy, a Promise for the Future.

For its 150th anniversary, the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) wrote a new memorable chapter in its history and organized, on Thursday the 21st of August 2025, its first Grand Dinner at the Plateau de Bakish. More than 620 USJ friends and alumni gathered together for a historical moment marked by solidarity and hope.

The evening brought together multiple academic, social and political figures, as well as a big number of USJ alumni and friends. The event was especially honored by the presence of the First Lady, Nehmat Aoun, together with several ministers: Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Tarek Mitri, Minister of Energy and Water and President of the USJ Board of Trustees H.E. Joseph Saddi, Minister of Culture H.E. Ghassan Salameh, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants H.E. Youssef Rajji, Minister of Tourism H.E. Mrs. Laura El Khazen Lahoud, Minister of Justice H.E. Adel Nassar, Minister of Information H.E. Paul Morcos, Minister of Environment H.E. Mrs. Tamara El-Zein, and her husband Jean-Noel Baleo, Regional Director for the Middle East at the University Agency of the Francophonie. In attendance were also ambassadors and representatives of the diplomatic corps, as well as the President of the Federation of Alumni Associations, H.E. Abbas El Halabi, the vice-rectors and deans of USJ, members of the University Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees of the USJ Foundation, and members of the Board of the Saint Joseph University Foundation in the United States.

Rector Prof. Salim Daccache, SJ, took the floor to warmly thank the First Lady, the ministers, ambassadors, USJ alumni, and friends of the University who were present. He emphasized that this dinner was not merely a festive occasion but truly an ‘Evening of Hope,’ meant to strengthen the shared commitment to education and to reaffirm USJ’s unique mission and core vocation: to dedicate one-third of its budget to scholarships, so that no student is ever excluded for financial reasons.

The Rector also announced that the Social Sciences Campus on Huvelin Street, home to the Faculty of Law and Political Science and the USJ Business School, will now carry the name of François Debbané, in tribute to this great man who was deeply dedicated!

The evening, organized by Caractère Events, showcased the talent of USJ alumni artists: the host John Achkar, singer Manel Mallat, and DJ Rodge. The auction, led by Mariana Wehbé, reflected an exceptional spirit of generosity.
