A Bridge Between Schools and Universities: The Bikfaya University Forum![]() On Thursday, November 13, the Bikfaya Serail hosted a major academic event: the Bikfaya Regional University Forum, organized by Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) in collaboration with the municipality of Bikfaya–Mhaydsseh. Bringing together 14 participating schools and 982 students, the forum offered direct interaction with 10 major Lebanese universities, transforming the village of Bikfaya into a true platform for academic and career orientation. This forum is part of a nationwide effort to bring universities closer to students and provide them with reliable, precise, and up-to-date information on academic programs, admission criteria, financial aid, scholarships, and professional opportunities. Students expressed strong interest in this interactive format, which offered them a direct exchange experience. The participating universities praised the quality of the questions, the students’ motivation, and the diversity of their academic aspirations. Beyond its academic dimension, the event was enriched by the symbolism of its location. The forum was held at the Bikfaya Serail, a historic building whose construction was overseen by architect Ferdinand Bonacina, S.J., an Italian Jesuit brother. Education counselors present at the event emphasized the importance of decentralizing academic initiatives in order to provide equal opportunities for students across all regions. Feedback from participating schools was overwhelmingly positive: renewed motivation, clearer academic pathways, broader perspectives, and a stronger awareness of the opportunities available in Lebanon. ![]()

Recently appointed as Head of the Neuro-Oncology at UChicago Medicine, the University of Chicago’s academic medical center, Prof. Youssef G. Comair continues to establish himself as one of the leading figures in contemporary neuro surgery. A globally recognized specialist in the treatment of complex brain tumors, he has established himself as a pioneer of awake craniotomies, a technique that allows surgeons to operate on certain areas of the brain while preserving the patient’s essential functions. A graduate of the Faculty of Medicine at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) in 1982, he pursued his neurosurgery specialization at McGill University in Canada, followed by postdoctoral training at the Montreal Neurological Institute, where he refined his expertise in brain tumor surgery and functional neurosurgery. His academic career began at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1990, where he taught as an assistant professor of neurosurgery. Three years later, he joined the Cleveland Clinic, where he worked until 2007 as a neurosurgery consultant and head of the epilepsy surgery program. From 1997 to 2012, he headed the neurosurgery department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), while also serving, starting 2006, as vice-chair of the neurosurgery department at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Professor Youssef Comair’s career is that of a man driven by a passion for science, deeply committed to the transmission of knowledge and the pursuit of excellence. From Beirut to Chicago, with stops in Montreal, Los Angeles, and Houston, he embodies a practice of medicine that combines scientific rigor, humanity, and vision.
