Methodology & Film Research

This course helps the student in the research work in order to develop the diploma short film project. The work includes reading books and articles, watching films, thematic and/or field research (investigation + interviews with specialists, witnesses, etc.) and in the archives. Research and documentation are carried out according to the chosen subject. Each follow-up is therefore personalized. Thanks to his research, the student should be able to develop a reflective approach to the writing and production of his film, whether it is a fiction film or a documentary film. He should also be able to mature and argue his aesthetic choices. This course is designed to support third-year students in developing their original ideas for their personal graduation film projects. Throughout the semester, each student will work on an individual project, exploring their concepts, examining their personal connection to their chosen themes and investigating their aesthetic choices. Different research methods will be introduced in class, addressing various aspects of filmmaking—from initial conceptualization to the visualization of the film’s tone, mood, and style. The coursework will alternate between group sessions and one-on-one meetings. In the group sessions, general research methods will be discussed, while the individual meetings will focus on personalized research and development process, according to each project’s subject and nature. By the end of the course, each student will have completed a comprehensive film portfolio and will be prepared to pitch his project and move on to the scriptwriting process in the following semester. The research work will include assigned readings from books and articles, film viewings, as well as thematic, archival and field research (scouting, investigation, interviews with specialists and witnesses, etc.) Through this course, students will develop a reflective approach to the writing and production of their films, whether fiction, documentary or experimental. They will also learn to articulate and defend their conceptual and aesthetic choices.
