Phonetics 2

This course comes in continuity with Phonetics 1. It will further develop the students’ understanding of articulatory phonetics and their listening and transcription skills. It will also introduce them to Acoustic Phonetics, i.e. the branch of phonetics that deals with the properties of sound waves. Building upon theoretical foundations in speech production and perception, the students will learn to use instrumental techniques for speech analysis. For this, the course will concentrate on spectrography since this is by far the most widely-used and versatile method. Lectures are supplemented laboratory practicals. The course as a whole serves as a foundation in instrumental, acoustic and advanced articulatory phonetics.
