Math cognition developmental disorders

This TU is part of the Bachelor’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy, in semester 6. It is a mandatory course, which allows students to learn the normal development of mathematical thinking in children. Students will acquire the related terminology and will develop knowledge on the typical development of the thought and mathematical concepts, they will understand what a number system is, how numbers develop in children and how children acquire counting and arithmetic operations. They will also understand the logical operations underlying these procedures and the different characteristics of mathematical word problems and how language is related to math acquisition. Students will also be introduced to some theoretical models such as ADAPT model for transcoding and Ménissier model for problem solving. This TU contributes to the development of the following competencies: - Ability to recognize the components of a number system - Aptitude to compare a child’s number development and logical skills to that of a typical development and link each level to the needed prerequisites - Capacity to analyze transcoding errors - Ability to analyze counting strategies - Ability to understand the concepts and analyze the procedures of arithmetic operations - Ability to analyze word problems and adapt the latter to a child’s level - Aptitude to understand the impact of language on the interpretation of mathematical language
