Assessing the knowledge, attitudes towards and practices of sugar-Sweetened Beverages and the determinants of their consumption among University Students in Lebanon: A mixed-methods approach.
Description :
The increasing global prevalence of overweight and obesity, driven in part by excessive sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) consumption, poses a major public health threat. Young adults are particularly vulnerable due to high intake levels. In Lebanon, SSB consumption exceeds global averages, yet limited research has explored the factors influencing such behaviors. This study aims to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Lebanese university students regarding SSBs, identify key determinants influencing SSBs consumption, and examine perception of SSB taxation. A mixed-methods approach will be adopted, combining online survey and semi-structured interviews. The quantitative component will assess KAP regarding SSBS and key determinants of SSBs consumption among students from all campuses and faculties of Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ). The qualitative component will explore students’ perceptions, motivations, and attitudes toward SSB consumption and taxation. A minimum sample of 381 students is required for the survey, while 20 purposively selected participants will be interviewed until thematic saturation is reached. Quantitative data will be analyzed using SPSS through descriptive, bivariate, and multivariate methods. Qualitative data will be thematically analyzed and triangulated with quantitative findings to enhance validity. Results are expected to provide valuable evidence to help shaping targeted awareness campaigns, public health policies, and interventions, ultimately contributing to reduce SSB intake and promote healthier lifestyles.
