The President of the Lebanese Republic, General Joseph Aoun, welcomed a delegation from the Saint Joseph University of Beirut, led by the University’s Rector, Prof. Salim Daccache, SJ, and accompanied by representatives from Hôtel-Dieu de France University Medical Center. The delegation congratulated him on his election and discussed the challenges facing higher education in Lebanon, particularly those affecting the Saint Joseph University of Beirut. They also expressed gratitude for his decision to have the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants represent him at the inauguration of the Faculty of Medicine’s new facilities. The Minister of Energy and Water, Joe Saddi, who also serves as President of the University’s Board of Trustees, also attended the meeting.

During the visit, Prof. Daccache reaffirmed the University’s and Hôtel-Dieu de France’s commitment to supporting the President’s efforts in advancing Lebanon’s recovery and ensuring the success of his term.

He then delivered the following speech:

“Your Excellency,

We come to you today from the Saint Joseph University of Beirut and Hôtel-Dieu de France to extend our blessings and best wishes as you embark on your mission as President of the Republic. When we used to meet you at the command headquarters, your first words to us were always: “We do not talk politics because it does not take us where we need to go.” You were right then, as you always have been, because what truly matters is love for the nation, serving it, and sacrificing for the homeland as a whole. Your words reflect those of a true statesman – one who places the good of the country above all else.

Lebanon is where we have learned our values and principles, and no matter how far we may go, it remains our home. This is why we must all work to serve it, especially in times of crisis, with every resource at our disposal. We are here today to offer you the full support of our institutions in the service of our community, knowing that your success is the success of the nation as a whole.

Despite the hardships and tragedies we have faced, the University, together with Hôtel-Dieu de France and its hospital network have continued to provide care to all, particularly to the officers and soldiers of the Lebanese Army, without discrimination. Just yesterday, we celebrated the inauguration of the Faculty of Medicine’s new facilities under your esteemed patronage. We are grateful that you entrusted Mr. Youssef Rajji, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants – one of our distinguished alumni – to represent you on this occasion. These buildings were constructed amidst the chaos of war, standing as a testament to our unwavering roots and our determination to remain on this land, committed to shaping a brighter future.

On behalf of the 4,000 dedicated individuals within our institutions, we pledge to work hand in hand for a brighter future for our beloved Lebanon.

Long live Your Excellency, and long live Lebanon!”

President Aoun’s response:

President Aoun welcomed the delegation and commended the pivotal role the Saint Joseph University of Beirut plays in shaping a promising generation of students across various disciplines. He underscored the need to intensify efforts in the coming period to create better opportunities and conditions that would help reduce the emigration of Lebanese youth.

He also expressed his appreciation for the unwavering commitment of Hôtel-Dieu de France, particularly during the country’s challenging times, recognizing the dedication and sacrifices of its medical staff, nurses, and healthcare professionals.

In honor of the University’s 150th anniversary, Prof. Daccache presented President Aoun with an icon of Saint Joseph and the University’s 150th-anniversary commemorative medal. He also extended an invitation for the President to attend the official celebration on March 19.
