Will AI Take the Doctor’s Seat? Understanding the Adoption of AI Tools in Interpreting Medical Results and the Roles of Personality Traits, Perceived Trust and Risk

Description :

As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly integrated into the medical field, understanding the factors that influence their adoption by physicians is critical. This study aims to investigate how psychological, technological, and perceptual elements shape physicians’ willingness to use AI in clinical decision-making. By focusing on trust, perceived risk, and individual traits, the research sheds light on the dynamics driving AI acceptance in healthcare. Specifically, this study aims to extend the UTAUT model and investigates the roles played by AI explainability, personal innovativeness, and technology characteristics within the context of using AI tools for medical purposes. The empirical analysis further tests for the mediating roles of risk perception, perceived value and trust in the relationships between UTAUT factors and intention to use AI tools for medical purposes. The proposed model will also explore the moderating role of personality traits in the relationships between perceived risk, trust and intention to use AI tools for medical purposes. To the best of our knowledge, this topic remains underexplored in literature, especially from the perspective of physicians, at a time when AI adoption in healthcare is accelerating rapidly. The findings of this research could assist policymakers and managers in healthcare facilities to depict which factors influence the physician’s intention to use AI tools for medical purposes. As such they will be able to develop strategies and policies to promote the use of AI tools across physicians particularly since AI offers tremendous medical technological innovations that could support clinical decisions and advance health service quality.
