The purpose of this course is to introduce foreign students to Oriental Christianity in its historical, liturgical, artistic, linguistic, moral and spiritual dimensions, thus showing the richness and diversity of its ecclesiastical traditions. Therefore, we will start by setting the historical background; we will then explain mass as it is celebrated in different oriental churches; introduce students to the understanding of icons and the art of iconography, showing their theological and liturgical significance; explore Syriac traditions and chants; study texts on spirituality and morals written by prominent oriental Church Fathers; examine the eremitic heritage of the Maronite church; visit of a holy site in Lebanon; and finally watch and then debate a movie about Oriental Christian spirituality.
