Relationship between intestinal microbiota and infantile colic

Description :

Fifty colicky infants will be included for intestinal analysis . Stool samples will be collected at enrolment, one month after enrolment and at second and third months of life. Samples from control infants will be collected at similar intervals. All samples will be analyzed by quantitative PCR and by direct sequencing of 16Sr RNA gene. Also, colicky infants will be treated by probiotics or by a formula with pre/probiotics. Clinical data and the amelioration of symptoms will be registered and intestinal microbiota will be compared before and after treatment based on the microbiota analysis of fecal samples. The results will indicate the presence of microbial signatures in the first weeks of life in infants developing colic. These microbial signatures may be used to understand the excessive crying. The results might offer opportunities for early diagnosis as well as prevention strategies and specific treatment
