Stanford University recently ranked Prof. Hadi Kanaan of the Saint Joseph University of Beirut (USJ) among the top 2% of the world’s most-cited researchers. This distinction underscores the international impact of his research and the value of long-term commitment to a local academic institution, especially in a region where many seek opportunities abroad.

An expert in electrical and electronic engineering, Prof. Kanaan was ranked 1,466th out of 87,611 scientists worldwide in his field. Based on 23 years of citation data, the Stanford ranking reflects not just academic output but sustained global relevance. Yet behind the numbers lies a meaningful story: that of a researcher who chose to build a career without ever turning his back on the institution that shaped him.

His journey began in 1986, when he enrolled at USJ’s School of Engineering in Beirut (ESIB). For him, ESIB was not just the foundation of a career, but a lifelong community. Even while pursuing his PhD abroad, he remained closely connected to his alma mater, regularly returning to teach and engage with students. In 2001, he joined USJ as a full-time instructor and researcher, driven not by convenience, but by commitment.

“I had the golden opportunity and the privilege to start this amazing journey in 1986,” he says. “As all Esibians know, when you get to know ESIB, it becomes difficult for you to leave it.”

At a time when professional success is often associated with mobility and detachment from one’s roots, Prof. Kanaan chose a different path. His journey demonstrates that academic loyalty is not a limitation but an asset. By staying committed to USJ, he advanced his research, supported his students, and strengthened the institution through his ongoing work.

His story resonates strongly in Lebanon, and his decision to stay, lead, and invest locally sends a powerful message: excellence isn’t always about leaving, it can also come from staying, building, and strengthening the institutions that shaped us.

Prof. Kanaan’s recognition is a call to action, not only for young researchers but also for the institutions that shape them. His story shows what becomes possible when universities serve as enduring homes for talent, not just training grounds. His achievements confirm that global impact can emerge from local dedication, and that meaningful academic careers can thrive in Lebanon.

Behind every citation in the Stanford report lies a story of mentorship, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to the ESIB community. Behind every number is a choice: to return, to remain, and to give back. Prof. Kanaan’s legacy is still unfolding, marked by scientific excellence and a deep sense of purpose.

Prof. Kanaan reminds us that true achievement is not only measured by reach, but by roots, and by the lasting impact one can have on the community that first inspired them.
